Friendship and Values

Karina has always had a special place in yogamii's heart and has played a significant role in the creation of yogamii. Lili got the idea for yogamii during one of Karina's yoga retreats, where a conversation about organically certified yoga clothes turned into a business plan. Karina was the muse who gave inspiration to the first designs and colors.

In connection with Karina's Bodyfulness launch, an interview and a photoshoot were obvious because even though it's been a few years since the idea of yogamii arose, the values are still aligned. Yoga is about uniting body and mind, and it makes sense to ensure that the clothing you wear during practice is free from harmful chemicals - and just as importantly- that the people who makes your clothes do so under ethically, worthy working conditions.

So enjoy our little talk with Karina and read the interview below.

What is the essence of bodyfulness?

Bodyfulness is practicing being present and therefore resembles mindfulness, but there are also significant differences. For example, bodyfulness is based on an entirely new breathing technique, a greater freedom of movement, and a complete acceptance of the emotions that emerge in the body.

In bodyfulness, we have three guiding stars:

  1. Listen to the body - it whispers messages to you all the time.
  2. Make room for all your emotions - both light and dark.
  3. Nurture liveliness - laugh, sigh and stretch the body.

When / how did you discover the effects of bodyfulness?

Already as a 15-year old, I became drawn to yoga. Since then, I have immersed myself into the body, first as a physiotherapist and psychotherapist. Over the past 20 years, I have developed the bodyfulness method with inspiration from both mindfulness, breathing therapy, and yoga.

It was when I dived into breathing therapy, that I gained contact with an even greater presence and a calmness that I didn’t always find through yoga. I needed to set the body more free than one does in mindfulness and yoga to make room for more spontaneous movements and expressions. In bodyfulness, we also move the body intuitively to music and work with these spontaneous tremors that occur when the body lets go.

How do you define slow living?

Slowness is central to bodyfulness. Not in the sense that everything must take place slowly but slowing down entirely can be a great tool for feeling your body. One can, e.g., try to eat slowly and feel, smell, and taste the food. In bodyfulness, we also invite you to stop up completely during the day and feel inwards. It can be for two minutes where you close your eyes, take a deep breath, and feel the sensations in your body. Occasionally slowing down the pace is a very simple and effective tool for more significant bodily presence.

How do you define sustainability?

Sustainability has always been important to me. I choose my clothes carefully, go for recycled clothes, exchange clothes with my friends and go for organic clothing brands.

I also consciously try not to overconsume, for example, not throwing food out, buying local produce according to the seasons, and sorting my waste.

But sustainability also applies to the way I "consume" my life. I'm very aware that I can't do the same as when I was 20 years old. I strive to have plenty of space in my calendar, so I don't over-consume my energy.

What does a regular week look like for you?

My weeks are very different. Luckily, I'm my own boss. My mornings are sacred because there is a special introverted energy that I love. In the morning, we have easier access to our subconscious and the resources that our subconscious holds. In the morning, I either practice bodyfulness or go for a run and always conclude it by swimming in the sea. Although it can be barrier-breaking on a cold winter's day, it gives the body a wonderful rush.

When I am not away teaching on retreats, I spend a little time in front of the computer, I film videos for my online courses, I have approximately 5 clients weekly, and I also teach and do my planning.

I am currently planning an education in bodyfulness, and it’s taking some time. Then I also have other interests such as horseback riding, salsa, ceramics, and drawing. Creativity is quite important to me as it gives me inspiration for my work.

How important is breathwork in everyday life?

I don't think one can overestimate the importance of our breathing. Although we breathe 20,000 times a day, many are not paying much attention to their breathing. But there is a lot of energy to be gained from breathing more deeply and more efficiently.

In bodyfulness, we work very consciously with the breath, and one learns through the breath to release traumas and old tensions that are hidden in the body.

A perfect merge between Karina the nature and our organic clothes.

What attracts you to our designs/clothes and how would you define yogamii?

I love the simple Nordic design, and the clothes have an insanely delightful quality and last for many years. Some of my yoga tops are over 5 years old, and I really use them a lot.

yogamii is my favorite workwear :) It is stylish and, at the same time, incredibly comfortable to wear.

yogamii is Nordic coolness - produced by people with warm hearts.
